Ceremonies - Pet Funerals

"In our garden repose the remains of those that possess
beauty without vanity, strength without insolence,
courage without ferocity, and the virtues of man
without his vices: our pets"
Lord Byron

Those of us that have experienced the unconditional love and companionship of a beloved pet also know the heartbreak that comes with their loss. They are as much a part of the family as anyone, and bring us the same laughter, and comfort as our partners and our children. They teach us many lessons and are an excellent discipline for our children.

The love and joy that our pets provide is priceless. The pain and sadness we feel when a pet dies is overwhelming.

Children’s tears, loneliness at the loss of our companion, and family heartache consume us. Whether the animal was our sole companion or a member of our family, we grieve deeply at their loss.

Today more than ever, we look for a way to acknowledge our respect and appreciation of the love and entertainment that they have brought to the home and to family and friends.

Funeral services for our pets give us a sense of peace and help keep our beloved friend forever in our hearts.

Jan Littlejohn is a pet lover and the compassion she shares will bring comfort at this difficult time.

Saying Goodbye to a Pet

The death of a beloved pet is as devastating as that of a close relative or friend but at least with our human relatives and friends we usually go through an established process of cremation or burial which brings us some closure. This doesn’t always happen in the case of our pets and Sydney civil celebrant, Jan Littlejohn, is taking steps to remedy this. She holds funeral services for pets either in the garden where the pet spent happy times or at a local pet crematorium. The service is short and simple and is a celebration of a pet’s life. If a cremation has already taken place Jan suggest that s tree be planted as a memorial. “I try to help people understand that it is okay to mourn losing a pet in the same way that we mourn our human family and friends.” She says. Jan’s canine family member is Jack, a Miniature Schnauzer that always greets visitors at the front door with “a hug around the legs”.
